Ambarella HomeKit integration speeds time to market for new home monitoring devices
Ambarella, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMBA), a leading developer of low-power, HD and Ultra HD video compression and image processing semiconductors, today announced support for the new Apple HomeKit camera and doorbell services. A key benefit of the HomeKit ecosystem is that all cameras in the home, including entrance video doorbells, home monitoring cameras, outdoor lights with integrated cameras, and baby monitors, can all be viewed using the new Home app on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Apple Watch. By initially offering both services on the widely deployed S2Lm Full HD IP camera SoC, Ambarella aims to facilitate integration of HomeKit into a wide variety of home monitoring products, and to accelerate the adoption of HomeKit video products into Apple’s growing ecosystem.
At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple highlighted a number of leading products based on Ambarella’s platform and the new Homekit camera and doorbell services, including the Canary Plus, Ring Video Doorbell Pro, FLIR Secure, Kuna Smart Security Light, and August Doorbell Cam.
“We are delighted to be offering HomeKit support running on our platform”, said Chris Day, Ambarella VP of Marketing and Business Development. “We have worked closely with Apple and our customers to bring the first HomeKit IP camera and Video Doorbell products to market, and are excited by the ease of use enabled by the new HomeKit services”.
Ambarella is providing a complete implementation of the new HomeKit camera and doorbell services, with native support for WAC (Wireless Accessory Configuration) setup, HAP (HomeKit Accessory Protocol), 1080p30 encoding with simultaneous second stream at 720p30, high-quality audio recording, and AES-256 encryption. In addition to cameras and doorbells, customers can easily use the base HomeKit stack provided by Ambarella to add customized services such as motion sensors, lights, and smart locks.
The Ambarella S2Lm IP camera SoC includes excellent 1080p video quality with HDR (High Dynamic Range) processing for high contrast scenes and lens distortion correction for a more natural viewing experience when using wide angle lenses. It also includes Ambarella’s smartAVC high-efficiency encoding technology to stream high-quality HD video streams at very low bitrates while reducing network bandwidth requirements and lowering cloud storage costs.
